X Trench Run Tips & Strategy
A practical guide to longer X Trench Run flights: read walls early, reset to the centre, hug the wall to break laser gates, kill turrets before they fire, and keep sliding while the boss shoots.

Decide early, move small
Nearly every crash in X Trench Run is a late decision. The trench shows you what is coming well in advance; strong pilots pick their line while obstacles are still tiny, make small corrections, and keep the cannons busy the whole time.
- 01
Read two walls ahead
Walls are visible from far down the trench, cyan-edged openings and all. By the time the nearest wall fills the screen you should already know where the one behind it wants you. At top speed, steering only for the nearest wall is how runs end.
- 02
Reset to the centre
After each opening, drift back towards the middle of the trench. From the centre, every possible opening — left half, top slot, a corner window — is a short move away. From a corner, the opposite corner is the longest trip in the game.
- 03
Hug the wall to break a gate
Laser gate pillars stand against the side walls, so shots fired from the centre sail past them. Pick a side early, slide over until your nearer wingtip cannon lines up, and hold fire. Each lit square on the pillar is one more hit; breaking either pillar kills every beam.
- 04
Kill turrets while they are small
Turrets only shoot when they are within range, and their light turns red just before each shot. Destroy them while they are still distant and you take both the five points and the threat off the board. Shots pass through wall openings, so you can hit a turret sitting behind a wall.
- 05
Fire almost all the time
There is no ammo, no heat gauge, and no penalty for missing. Holding fire clears turrets you have not even noticed. If holding a key gets tiring, press F or tap the crosshair button for auto-fire.
- 06
Spend power-ups where they matter
A Shield is worth most when you keep it — fly carefully so it stays unbroken for the mistake you will make at high speed. Speed Down is far more valuable late in a run than early. Wall Destroyer turns any stretch into free points, so stop dodging and focus on turrets while it lasts.
- 07
Keep sliding during the boss
Boss fireballs are aimed at where you are when they are fired. A slow, steady sideways drift makes most of them land behind you. Follow the boss’s path with your cannons, but let your eyes stay on the incoming fire.
By stage of the run
How the approach shifts as you speed up
The habits above apply throughout. What changes is how much margin you have — see speed and difficulty in the guide.
The first kilometre
Speed is low and openings are wide. Use it to settle into a rhythm: centre, read, commit. Practise breaking gates from both sides so you are not stuck favouring one.
Mid-run
Turret pairs show up in front of walls and gates take more hits. Clear turrets first, then line up for the wall. This is where a held Shield usually saves a run.
Late game
The trench is near top speed and openings are barely wider than the ship. Small, early corrections beat big late swerves. Every boss is now a serious threat — dodge first, shoot second.
